Launch of Mayo Music and Musings – 6 C.D. Collection – 20 years on Mid West Radio by Joe Byrne

‘Mayo Music and Musings Collection’ – 6 CD’s – 20 Years on Mid West Radio, compiled by Joe Byrne, was launched on Friday Dec. 4th 2009 in the Park Hotel in Kiltimagh.

There was a great turn out at the special event, among them many leading musicians, singers poets and historians.

THE LAUNCH

The Launch was done by Tom Shiel, regional editor of the Connacht Telegraph. Tom was the ideal person for such an occasion as he himself worked in the radio station in Ballyhaunis, was the main voice of the news on Mid West radio for many years and it was Tom who put in place most of the news network and systems in the fledgling station. Tom began by saying ”This is a unique and very special collection of music, song, lore, poems, talk and history that includes contributors from almost every corner of Mayo.” He then went on to praise the efforts made in recording and in gathering up such valuable material, – without the assistance of recording equipment or of any travel expenses. ”However the fruit of the labour is evident and I can only compare it to a diligent farmer who has husbanded his land carefully and is now gathering and saving a rich harvest into a granary.”

Achadh Mór U 10 – 09 Review

Achadh Mor Gaa U – 10 news Round Up for 2009.It was a very good year. Training took place on Saturdays at 10. 30 and there was an exceptionally good attendance from the large pool of 31 players. At this level the emphasis is on skills development. We were lucky to  have a core of highly talented young lads. Furthermore most of the panel were very committed .. one of the keenest bunches of players for many years. Great progress was made in team and individual skills. At u10 level its not competition driven but in order to help maintain an edge and an appetite a number of challenge matches were arranged. We played four in total against Cnoc Mor, Coillte Mach, Michael Glaveys, and Eanach Cuain. Later on Eanach Cuain invited us to take part in a blitz tournanent at their grounds in Galway in October. There were 8 matches on the day and we won 4 and lost 4 . It was a particularly enjoyable and useful experience for us. Parents kindly arranged tea, sandwiches and treats for the teams afterwards as did our own parents for the home matches. The skills tests which were held in October also were very successful and there was 100 percent attendance. I wish to thank the club officials and my fellow mentors and trainers Tommy Lyons,  Liam Brady, and Paul Mc Guinness. The 07 panel was Cathal Brady, James lyons, Christy Cobnboy, Ross Egan, Dylan prendergast, Steimphin Glynn, Dara Hunt, Dylan Niland, Aiden Henry, Kevin Austin Tighe, Nevin Fannon, Stephen Collins, Diarmaid Duffy, Sean Kenny, Brian Morley, Martin Mulhern, Nathan Boles, Aiden Byrne, Danny Jennings, Shane Crinnigan, Niall Dunleavy, Brian Waldron, Thomas Duffy, Sean Og Tighe, John Cassidy and Jason Cullinane. Finally a very big go raibh agaibh to all our supportive parents.

Bill Naughton

William John Francis Naughton, or Bill Naughton (Ballyhaunis, 12 June 1910 – Ballasalla, 9 January 1992) was a playwright and author, best known for his play Alfie.

Born in Ballyhaunis, County Mayo,Ireland his family moved in 1914 to Bolton, Lancashire, England, where he attended Saint Peter and Paul’s School. Naughton worked as a weaver, coal-bagger and lorry-driver before he started writing. Naughton’s preferred environment was working class society. Although Alfie is the play with which he will always be associated, mostly because of the British film starring Michael Caine in the eponymous role, he was a prolific writer, with both plays, novels, short stories and children’s books to his name. At least two of his other plays have been transferred onto the cinema screen as well. These are Spring and Port Wine, which had James Mason starring in the role of Rafe Crompton, and The Family Way, which starred John Mills. His work also includes the novel One Small Boy (1957), and the collection of short stories The Goalkeeper’s Revenge: And Other Stories (1961). Had many of his plays performed at the Octagon Theatre in Bolton town Centre and has a theatre named after him. (more…)

Folk Music of Ireland

The folk music of Ireland (also known as Irish traditional music, Irish trad, Irish folk music, and other variants) is the generic term for music that has been created in various genres on the entire island of Ireland, North and South of the Border.

Irish traditional music has survived more strongly against the forces of cinema, radio and the mass media than the indigenous folk music of most European countries. This was partly due to the fact that the country was not a battleground in either of the two world wars. Another significant factor was that the economy was largely agricultural, where oral tradition usually thrives. From the end of the second world war until the late fifties folk music was held in low regard. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (an Irish traditional music association) and the popularity of the Fleadh Cheoil (music festival) helped lead the revival of the music. The English Folk music scene also encouraged and gave self confidence to many Irish musicians. Following the success of The Clancy Brothers in the USA in 1959, Irish folk music became fashionable again. The lush sentimental style of singers such as Delia Murphy was replaced by guitar-driven male groups such as The Dubliners. Irish showbands presented a mixture of pop music and folk dance tunes, though these died out during the seventies. The international success of The Chieftains and subsequent musicians and groups has made Irish folk music a global brand.
